What? You were expecting blurbs and pictures?

Nah, here at PM we strive to be difficult. ^^; Although technically there are banner-y pictures and there are blurb like components to this page, if you really want character profiles check out Theria.net... I'd just be reiterating. (The link's under 'resources' to your right, if you've for some reason been living under a rock and have not yet been to Theria's site.)

Instead we have fun things. Random fun things, even, many of which were donated by concerned citizens striving to aid us in our understanding of Yami no Matsuei's characters. It's enough to bring on an attack of the warm fuzzies. ^-^

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
.::THE SHINIGAMI NAME GAME::.

Ever wonder if Matsushita was attempting to be allegorical when she named the boys? Well wonder no longer…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
.::PERSONALITY TYPES::.

And you thought the Myers-Briggs was just a farce they made you study in Psych 101. The Yami boys, psychoanalyzed…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
.::YAMI TAROT DECK::.

Once, there was a Sephy, who saw that Central Park Media had attempted to make a Yami no Matsuei tarot deck and fumbled miserably. And so Sephy said unto herself: "I can do better." And she did, and it was good.

Welcome to the Anti-Encarta...

This is not meant to be an end all be all encyclopedia of Yami characters and their quirks. This is more like that little listing at the beginning of Rita Mae Brown books that helps you keep track of the multitude in an ensemble piece. So, should you come across some minor character you can’t remember for the life of you, wonder no longer. They’re listed in alphabetical order, by the name they are most often called. (i.e.-Mibu Oriya is listed under his first name, because who remembers his last name, anyway?)

If anyone thinks of a character that should be here and isn’t, feel free to email us here and tell us why. I’ve only scratched the surface of the manga, so I know I’m missing something.
  • 003 – Watari’s faithful companion, the little furbie-like owl forever sitting atop his shoulder and fluttering about his head. She’s even trained to clap whenever he does something particularly entertaining.

  • Byakko - One of the four most notable of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, Byakko appears as a mammoth white tiger or a red eyed, white haired boy of about seventeen. (Still retaining the fun tail) He is a wind Shikigami, and is by far the goofiest of the twelve in Tsuzuki’s service, with a tendency to mimic his master’s less than mature behavior.

  • The Count – Hakushaku is in charge of the Castle of Candles, the reservoir of flickering lights that symbolize the lives of mortal men. In between long bouts of goofy lechery, his function is to snuff out the lives of those people listed in the Kiseki, often turned to for extensions on the lives in his control by Tsuzuki, who is in all kinds of trouble should the Count choose to cash in on all those ‘favors’.

  • Daion – Another of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, who is a pot. A greasy little mason jar wannabe with a head scarf and eye holes, to be exact. This is supposed to be useful?

  • EnmaDaiOh – The God of Hell, or something along those lines, the overlord of Meifu who oversees the operations of the Shinigami from afar and has apparently taken a personal interest in Tsuzuki’s case.

  • Genbu - The God of Earth, another of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami. He appears as a dumpy old man, and is often the target of the other Shikis’ anger management issues.

  • Gushoshin - The twin, vaguely chicken-like gods who run the library at JuOhCho, organizing the records that are put into the Kiseki on a daily basis. They also serve as temporary field agents if one of the Shinigami are partner-less for whatever reason.

  • Hakushaku – The Count is in charge of the Castle of Candles, the reservoir of flickering lights that symbolize the lives of mortal men. In between long bouts of goofy lechery, his function is to snuff out the lives of those people listed in the Kiseki, often turned to for extensions on the lives in his control by Tsuzuki, who is in all kinds of trouble should the Count choose to cash in on all those ‘favors’.

  • Hijiri - Minase Hijiri, unfortunate recipient of another man’s contract with Saagatanasu, the demon from The Devil’s Trill, through a cornea transplant. A prodigy with a violin and dark haired doppelganger to Hisoka.

  • Irene - Irene (or sometimes Ilene) was a flower girl Tsubaki-hime met and befriended while in Hong Kong. After being invited to board the Queen Camilla with Tsubaki, she disappeared.

  • Kannuki Wakaba – Wakaba appears to have died somewhere between the ages of fourteen and seventeen, as she is still running around the afterlife with ribbons in her hair, wearing what appears to be a school uniform. She is a veritable Betty Crocker, forever offering her latest baking experiment, finding sweets for Tsuzuki, or otherwise mothering him, much to her partner’s annoyance. There is a modicum of UST between she and Terazuma.

  • Kazusa - The unfortunate little girl whose soul her father unwittingly traded to the demon in The Devil’s Trill. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?

  • Kijin - SohRyu’s oldest child, who appears as a blue haired boy of about fifteen. He is quieter than his father, more temperate and his talents lie in divination rather than warfare.

  • Konoe-Kacho – The chief of the shokan division, a man who appears to have died in his late fifties or early sixties. He seems to lean on Tatsumi to do most of the real work around the office, but has been known to fight like hell with the higher ups for the sake of his employees (read: Tsuzuki…) when they get into trouble, and cares more than he is willing to admit about their well being. He spends a lot of time demanding sweets and souvenirs from wherever his employees visit, and otherwise threatening to fire Tsuzuki like the comic relief police captain from a Lethal Weapon movie.

  • Kouchin - One of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, who appears as a court musician.

  • Kurikara RyuOh - The Big Scary of GenSouKai, Kurikara is the god of dragons, who appears as little more than a child. A fire Shikigami, Kurikara was imprisoned long ago in the desert of GenSouKai. It is rumored that he and SohRyu fought at one time.

  • Kurosaki Hisoka – For Hisoka, dying was an upgrade. From training to take over the family’s holdings to being locked in his parents’ cellar at the first signs of empathic talent and his subsequent rape and murder at Muraki’s hands, there was nothing about his natural life that made the effort worthwhile. Entering the afterlife in the hopes of finding his murderer, Hisoka’s determination to remain detached from his new existence is constantly foiled by Tsuzuki’s never ending enthusiasm for life.

  • Maria Won(g) - As a famous singer in both her native country of China and Japan, Maria seemed to have it all. But the proverbial evil stepmother robbed her of her will to live, and drove her to commit suicide. Exhumation, zombification, and Muraki doing his mad puppet master routine pretty much killed any notions she might have had of resting in peace until the boys take it upon themselves to intervene.

  • Muraki Kazutaka – The consummate evil bad guy. Is he a sadist? Is he a sociopath? No one knows! Muraki has been fixated on Tsuzuki since he first read of him in his grandfather’s journals, driven by his own disillusionment with the power of modern medicine to find the perfect body, raping and pillaging his way towards his ultimate goal. He of the semi-albino coloring and the mechanical eye, purveyor of such lines as ‘our sensuous meeting all those years ago’, and wearer of absurdly pristine clothing (Where are the blood stains? WHERE?), Muraki-sensei walks the line between the surreal and the absurd, and does it well.

  • Oriya - Mibu Oriya is a childhood friend of Muraki’s, a man hopelessly devoted to his friend and a symbol of Muraki’s lost humanity. Oriya runs a brothel in Kyoto, and is a master swordsman, an art which seems to be the focus of his life. While Oriya is willing to look the other way where Muraki’s crimes are concerned, he does not approve, and there is a point at which he will draw the line and give up his friend for the greater good.

  • Riko - Hisoka’s wise cracking, Spanglish speaking Shikigami, who appears as a cactus with a cowboy hat on. (Roy Rogers is spinning in his grave… assuming he’s dead, anyway.) A cheerful little water Shikigami, Riko is designed to be defensive, a fact which Hisoka sees as a weakness. He manages to step on Hisoka’s last nerve at every opportunity.

  • Rikugou - Another of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, Rikugou looks a lot like Watari with extra eyes. (Two normal, two on his forehead, and two on the palms of his hands.) He is an astronomer, and apparently is Genbu’s student, though you’d never know it for his tendency to beat his master over the head.

  • Ruka - Tsuzuki’s older sister, about whom we know all of two things. She taught him to dance (yay her) and to cook. (not so yay)

  • Saagatanasu - The demon from The Devil’s Trill, a ‘prince of hell’, and other long-winded titles. His name has about six other translations.

  • Saki - Shindo Saki is Muraki’s half-brother, a product of his father’s adultery. When he is brought to live with the family he murder’s Muraki’s parents, an act for which young Kazutaka foolishly attempts to get revenge. Saki is foiled by a servant who sees Muraki attempting to fight him off and shoots him to protect his charge. Now he’s a head in a jar.

  • Saya and Yuma - Torii Saya and Fukiya Yuma are the fangirls of the shokan division, almost always seen together as they glomp Hisoka or otherwise attempt to force him into women’s clothing.

  • SohRyu - (Seiryu) SohRyu is the representative of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, who appears as a blue dragon or a stern, long haired soldier. He is a powerful water Shikigami whose glare is enough to make even Tsuzuki cringe, and spends most of his time trying to beat some sense of order into the denizens of GenSouKai. He has two children, Kijin and Tenkou.

  • Suzaku - Suzaku is probably the pushiest of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, a fire Shiki who appears as a great phoenix (of the actual made-of-fire variety) or a warrior with a big ass sword and eighties reject hair. Known as Nee-san to most of those close to her, Suzaku has a tendency to disregard Tsuzuki’s wishes if she thinks it’s in his best interests, and has been known to pick fights with Touda, who she thinks is a raging asshole for trying to kill Tsuzuki in Kyoto.

  • Taimou - A faceless Shikigami, one of Tsuzuki’s twelve.

  • Tatsumi Seiichirou – Officially the secretary of EnmaCho, Tatsumi is often stuck playing straight man to his coworkers’ antics, displaying a patience for the sheer stupidity of their behavior that should qualify him for beatification. A formerly active agent with the unique (as in, second ever) ability to control ‘shadow magic’, a mysterious and often frightening power that ranks him among the most dangerous denizens of Meifu. Often seen as the more upright Shinigami, Tatsumi struggles to maintain some sense of order within the division but his blatant soft spot for Tsuzuki and his tendency towards dry humor belie his uncompromising exterior.

  • Tenkou - The youngest of SohRyu’s children, Tenkou appears as a shy, goofy little girl.

  • Tenkuu - The palace at GenSouKai is actually a living Shikigami, and one of the twelve under Tsuzuki’s control.

  • Terazuma Hajime – One of the youngest Shinigami, Terazuma has (probably) only been in the office for about fifteen years. A standoffish ex-detective, Terazuma believes that those with power have a responsibility to use it for the greater good, and is often rude to Tsuzuki for his reluctance to do his job. His appearance has been altered due to a connection to the Shikigami KaGanKokuShunGei (called Kuro-chan by Watari for some inexplicable reason), resulting in black markings beneath red eyes, elf-like ears, and the inability to touch women (or poor Hisoka for some reason) without KaGanKokuShunGei manifesting and destroying his surroundings. There seems to be a bulk of UST between Terazuma and his partner, Kannuki Wakaba.

  • Touda - Touda is the grumpiest of Tsuzuki’s Shikigami, a fire Shiki who appears as a great tern snake or a man with an odd visor strapped to his head. He is willing to take orders because Tsuzuki pulled him from his prison in Tenkuu, but he takes them literally, even when they may do more harm than good. He is completely unapologetic for his behavior, and publicly admits that he is an asshole (well, a ‘bad fire Shikigami’ anyway), which aggravates Suzaku to no end.

  • Tsubaki-hime - Kakyouin Tsubaki is the daughter of the owner of the Queen Camilla, the cruise ship the boys were sent to investigate in King of Swords. She is painfully demure and lost in willful ignorance, with a great worship of Muraki-sensei even after she learns he is a murderer. Her only real friend before her stunted pursuit of Hisoka was a flower girl by the name of Irene, who disappeared mysteriously soon after boarding the ship.

  • Tsuzuki Asato – It sucks to be Tsuzuki in many exciting ways. Perfectly rational people turn into stalker lunatics upon meeting him, his bosses are forever threatening to fire him, and docking his pay has become standard procedure. Never mind the uber-angst that has trailed him since the ever mysterious night in 1918 that drove him to insanity and eventual suicide after an eight year stint in the hospital. Tsuzuki is among the oldest and most powerful Shinigami, commanding twelve powerful Shikigami in the stead of his own equally mysterious and apparently uncontrollable power, but he still finds himself being browbeaten for his laziness at every turn. Despite it all, Tsuzuki remains a compassionate and loyal man. Give him some pie and he’s a happy puppy.

  • Watari Yutaka – The resident mad scientist of EnmaCho spends most of his time holed up in his lab with his birds, his computer, and his never ending search for a viable gender switching potion. He has a degree in mechanical engineering and a number of interesting talents, such as his strange ability to grant sentience to mechanical appliances and drawings, an effect made somewhat less impressive by the fact that his drawing skills are on par with those of a second grader. His attempts at chemical engineering, while enthusiastic, have been somewhat less successful than his mechanical designs, resulting in the explosive destruction of his lab on a nearly constant basis.

  • Watson – An odd little corpse-like servant who works for Hakushaku.

  • Yuma and Saya - Torii Saya and Fukiya Yuma are the fangirls of the shokan division, almost always seen together as they glomp Hisoka or otherwise attempt to force him into women’s clothing.
